Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) and counting the resulting non-empty tokens. Hyphenated words (well-being) are counted as one word. Contractions (don't, it's) are counted as one word. Numbers, URLs, and email addresses each count as one word. Empty lines between paragraphs do not contribute to the word count.
Characters with spaces counts every character in the text including all spaces, tabs, and newlines — this is the raw length of the string. Characters without spaces counts only the non-whitespace characters — letters, numbers, punctuation. Twitter's 280-character limit, SMS character limits, and URL length constraints typically count all characters including spaces. Some platforms that specify a character minimum mean characters without spaces.
